There are several organizations out there dedicated in testing both active and passive safety systems in vehicles. By now, you’re likely familiar with the ASEAN NCAP or ASEAN New Car Assessment Program. It’s the standard used for models sold Southeast Asia and follows the guidelines set by the Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP).
Over in Australia, they have the ANCAP or Australasian New Car Assessment Program. Recently, the agency applied more stringent parameters to make it more difficult for automakers to get a five-star rating.

The first pickup to undergo the tougher test is the redesigned Mitsubishi Triton. Despite the tougher test, the pickup was able to bag the coveted five-star rating. So, how did it do it?
ANCAP did a comprehensive breakdown of the Triton’s performance, both in active and passive safety systems. In terms of crash protection, the Triton has that covered with the driver’s side offering good protection and the passenger side getting a perfect score. Rear passenger protection isn’t rated as high, though, with a moderate amount of risk for chest injuries. On the flip side, child occupant protection received near-perfect scores.

The tougher side impact tests revealed the Triton’s strong safety cage, posting solid marks in all kinds of testing. It included a simulated vehicle to vehicle impact and a pole test, the latter putting more forces on the pickup’s frame. ANCAP lauded the availability of center airbags that prevents passengers from hitting their heads against each other in a crash. Vulnerable road user protection was also rated as fair, making it one of the safer pickups for pedestrians, cyclists, and the like.
The Mitsubishi Triton’s advanced driver assist systems were also put to the test. The autonomous emergency braking systems were more than up to par, but ANCAP notes the emergency brakes for going in reverse needs improvement. Generally speaking, however, the systems performed adequately.
