Think the all-new Patrol doesn’t look off-road-ready? You might like the Armada Pro-4X

It’s a variant available in the US, and we think it should arrive in PH, too

You’ve seen the all-new Nissan Patrol. Unless you’ve been completely out of the loop today, we’ll just assume you already have.

The Y63 looks good, and we’re sure a lot of you agree. But we’ve been seeing some comments on how it looks too classy and doesn’t look like something you’d want to take off-road—fair enough, a lot of people said that about the Land Cruiser 300 when it debuted. But at least in the case of Nissan, there’s an alternative...at least in the US: the Nissan Armada Pro-4X.

The Armada, as the Patrol is called in some markets including the US, gets this beefier, off-road-ready trim in the lineup. Think Navara Pro-4X, but it’s not just for looks. This one gets 20-inch wheels shod in 275/60 R20 all-terrain tires and underbody skid plates for improved off-road performance.

The Armada Pro-4X also gets the standard equipment in the Patrol including the electronic locking rear differential and the adaptive electronic air suspension. The difference here is that the Pro-4X has 244mm (9.6 inches) of ground clearance with the suspension at its highest setting, which is supposedly 53mm (2.1 inches) higher than that of the standard Patrol—we say supposedly because Nissan didn’t share exact figures of the Y63’s ground clearance.

The Armada Pro-4X’s redesigned front fascia also improves its approach angle to 33 degrees, while its breakover angle is at 25.5 and departure at 24.5.

Of course, there are also changes to the interior. The layout is generally the same, but there are red accents all around the cabin, with Pro-4X badges stitched onto the seats. You’ll also find these red accents on the exterior, courtesy of the Nissan badges highlighting the blacked out grille and wheels.

The engine under the hood remains the same, so it gets the same 425hp, 700Nm 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo with the nine-speed automatic transmission. There’s the same intelligent 4WD drivetrain here, too, and basically the same features all around.

Now, the question is, will the Philippine-spec Patrol get the Pro-4X treatment when it finally arrives here? What do you guys think, should Nissan Philippines make it happen? We think so.
