Just about every automaker that makes a midsize pickup gets asked this: “Are you going to build a Ranger Raptor rival?”
To be honest, we’re not too surprised anymore. The original hot Ranger practically defined the segment here in Asia. So far, though, only Toyota has made a true response to the Ford.

Several car companies have expressed interest in building a performance midsize pickup. One of them is Mitsubishi, and Mitsubishi Triton’s chief product specialist, Yoshiki Masuda, also dreams of making a high performance version for the Triton down the line. Back in October 2023, he told us to expect a ‘model that will sit above the Athlete.’
Fast forward to today and it seems that Masuda-san’s dream might become reality.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia recently showed a teaser photo of the models it will release down the line. Most of the ones featured in the photo appear relatable to our market as well with a wide array of SUVs. We’ve already covered the potential next-gen Montero Sport, but the Triton in the photo also caught our attention.
If, like us, you were wondering what a Triton was doing in the teaser, you’re not alone. Besides, why show a teaser of a model that’s already in showrooms? A closer look does reveal why it’s in the photo, though.
The first thing one will notice are the blistered fender flares. It’s noticeably wider than the standard Triton and hints at a wider suspension track. The pickup also appears higher than the Athlete and GLS variants. Chunky tires complete the look. Mitsubishi isn’t giving much details at the moment. All it’s willing to say is it will be a “further strengthening of Triton's product range and appeal.”

Should it be the Triton Ralliart, the new one might be more than a sticker job this time around Given the knowhow the company gained by competing in the Asia Cross Country Rally, we could expect beefier suspension arrangements and a more aggressive look.
For now, though, we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
