The Suzuki Fronx has just received an updated, one-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). According to the organization, the Fronx failed several crash tests with repeated seatbelt malfunctions—particularly in the rear retractors.

“The seatbelt component failure is rare and serious,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg. “ANCAP exists to give consumers confidence, and when our tests reveal results of this nature, we will act in their best interest by communicating our findings promptly and transparently.”

Shortly after the report was shared, Suzuki Australia released a statement to reassure its customers that these new safety concerns are promptly being addressed.

The Japanese carmaker confirmed that the ANCAP report has been raised to the head offices, and that a “thorough and disciplined investigation” is ongoing. The report also mentioned that around 1,300 Fronx units have been sold in Australia, and another 1,000 in New Zealand. At the time of writing, Suzuki has not issued a recall in either country.

In our region, the Fronx secured a five-star safety rating from the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN-NCAP) in September, with no updates since then.

It is important to note that it is still unclear where the Fronx units from Australia and New Zealand are sourced from. The units tested by ASEAN NCAP, which are currently also in the Philippines, are built in Indonesia. Other markets receive their Fronx units from Suzuki’s Gujarat Plant in India.
