Morizo and Toyota Gazoo Racing pulled a fast one on everyone at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. After teasing a new and customized mid-engined two-seater, Toyota’s chairman laughingly announced that the new car is actually a heavily modified kei truck.

The host of the event reminded the audience that this type of vehicle is technically a midship with two seats—yeah, sure. Naturally, the comment section went off. It seems that the MR2, the Celica, and the GR Yaris M Concept will still be rumors for now, but at least the kei truck looks cool.

It is slated to go up against another modified kei car from Daihatsu, which was revealed to be the secret second tuner in Morizo’s social media posts. This exhibition will be the first part of a three-phase challenge between Gazoo Racing and the other motorsports divisions in Toyota.

From what we’ve seen, it looks like Gazoo Racing also took the liberty of turning a stock two-seater into a four-passenger performance utility vehicle—apparently, Morizo likes company while he burns rubber. The OEM kei car was also given new chunky tires and a fresh paint job designed with Morizo’s signature yellow color.

We still don’t know what performance upgrades Gazoo Racing gave this tiny truck, nor do we know what Daihatsu has modified in its kei car’s powertrain. However, it is still a mean little thing, with no windshield, new racing seats, and an intense-looking roll cage.

While it’s a shame that we won’t be seeing a new MR2, this kei car race should be a fun watch.
