Toyota Gazoo Racing has just revealed a refresh for the Toyota GR Yaris dubbed Type 26. This update focuses on incorporating feedback from pro drivers to further refine the rally-bred hot hatch.
One of the highlights? Not a power bump or a suspension tweak, but a new ‘meticulously crafted’ steering wheel. Toyota notes that the more conventional wheel design in previous GR Yaris iterations was prone to accidental button inputs during intense maneuvering. This insight came directly from professional racers, and GR responded by developing a new layout that addresses the issue.

The result? A more compact steering wheel that’s smaller in diameter, and with specially shaped grips that make it more comfortable to hold. The buttons are now clustered toward the center of the wheel so that they’re less prone to misinputs. The buttons also have individual mechanisms for improved reliability and are now illuminated to enhance visibility in dark environments.

Another feature receiving updates in line with motorsport insights: power steering. The goal was to make sure the system is functional even in extreme situations, such as during hard braking or when the car is fitted with sticky race tires. The torque sensor and control software have also been updated to improve response in any given condition.

For the RZ ‘high performance’ and RZ ‘high performance’ + ‘aero performance package’ trim levels, they now come standard with new Bridgestone Potenza Race tires. Revisions to the tread pattern, internal structure, and rubber compound aim to deliver improved control and stability even as the car is pushed to the limit, both on and off the track.
The front and rear shock absorbers have also been optimized to match the characteristics of the new tires.

Completing the updates are changes to the heating packages for the seat and the steering wheel. Previously, these options couldn’t be specified with the vertical parking brake in ‘Navigation Package’ or the ‘Comfort Package.’ Toyota has resolved these conflicts, allowing customers to opt in to both rather than one or the other.
Toyota dealerships in Japan are taking orders for the updated GR Yaris, with sales set to begin on April 6. All in all, it’s a minor round of upgrades, but still a showcase for GR’s motorsport-bred heritage. No official word yet if these upgrades are bound for the Philippines, but we'll keep you posted on the details.
