Ford EcoBoost engines available now as crate units for sports cars

Perfect for that Shelby 289 FIA Cobra?
Jan 21, 2014

Yesterday, we told you about the limited-edition 289 FIA Cobras that Shelby American is making 50 units of. As we mentioned, the 50 cars are all just rolling chassis, which means they won\'t have any drivetrains underneath the frame and chassis.

Well, we\'ve just discovered the perfect engine to shoehorn under the car\'s hood. Ford is now making its range of EcoBoost gasoline engines \"available to independent sports and racing car manufacturers.\"

Ford\'s EcoBoost engines--which combine turbocharging, direct injection and variable camshaft timing--are led by the two-time International Engine of the Year awardee, the 1.0-liter three-cylinder mill, followed by the 1.6- and 2.0-liter four-cylinder units, and then the range-topping 3.5-liter V6.

According to Ford, its crate EcoBoost engines are now available through Ford Component Sales, which is best known for supplying technology to specialist automotive manufacturers like Morgan, Caterham, Ginetta and Radical.

The American carmaker added that FCS sources the technologies and engines from Ford divisions around the world, with capacities ranging from 1.0 to 9.0 liters and in three-cylinder to V8 configurations. Fuel options also include gasoline, diesel, flexifuel and liquefied petroleum gas. Five- and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are also available for front- or rear-wheel-drive applications.
