Trike. Rickshaw. Tuk tuk. Whatever you want to call them, these tiny three-wheelers are there to whisk commuters in and around for a modest fare. The formula has been simple over the years, although there have been some electric alternatives sprouting lately.

Major automakers don’t often dabble in these types of vehicles, but Hyundai is dipping its toes in it nonetheless. In cooperation with India’s TVS Motor Company, the South Korean automaker has rolled out a pair of what’s called ‘last mile’ mobility solutions for India that also has potential for the rest of the world.

Showcased during the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, these ‘Micro Mobility Concept EVs’ came in two guises, one with four wheels, and another with three. Hyundai says the four-wheeled model is under review for global potential, but we’d like to make a case for the three-wheeler for the rest of Asia.

According to Hyundai, the three-wheeler, dubbed the E3W Concept, is a ‘re-imagining of India’s ubiquitous auto rickshaw.’ Of course, India isn’t the only country that utilizes three-wheelers for transport, which is all the more reason why we reckon this body style can succeed in other parts of the world.

There are several neat features packed in the E3W that could prove useful to its end users. For instance, the entire body can be lifted to make it more resilient on flooded roads. The central riding position and narrow body make it maneuverable around tight streets and offer better visibility. At the same time, it comes with a long wheelbase for better occupant space at the back.

Hyundai even added a ‘hood’ on the E3W and a windshield. That gives it better weather protection, as well as a small crumple zone to add a layer of safety. The company says it chose relatively large tires for the concept for a more comfortable ride, and it even comes with tow hooks just in case.

Aside from its use as a commuter, Hyundai aims to make the E3W an effective solution for SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) as well. The company also mentioned its possible use as a rapid response vehicle in hard-to-reach communities, along with the option of adding a wheelchair ramp to help mobilize PWDs.
