Big things are happening over in Detroit. Mark Reuss, a career-long company man at General Motors, has been named the company’s new president, effective immediately.

“Mark’s global operational experience, deep product knowledge, and strong leadership will serve us well as we continue to strengthen our current business, take advantage of growth opportunities, and further define the future of personal mobility,” says GM chairman and CEO Mary Barra. She adds that Reuss’s focus will be to help the brand develop its electric and autonomous technologies.

A mechanical engineer by trade, Reuss was born and raised in Detroit, and is a lifelong car enthusiast. His many accolades include certification as a test driver on the Nurburgring. His very first ride was a Chevrolet Camaro (naturally), and he even restored the car himself.

“I am very proud to have spent my entire career at General Motors, and to now take on this new role is truly a great honor,” Reuss says. “With our current lineup of outstanding cars, trucks, and crossovers around the world, I’m looking forward to keeping our momentum going at full speed.”

GM says that Reuss will double the resources allocated to the company’s electric and automotive programs in the next two years. Will this lead to more innovative tech from the American carmaker? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
