Maserati is a storied automaker filled with ups and downs. Things haven’t always been easy for the Italian automaker, filing for bankruptcy several times and getting rescued by a larger company.

Now, it seems that the Italian firm’s future is in limbo yet again. Following Stellantis’ 1H 2024 sales report, Maserati’s parent company might be selling it off on the near future.

That’s according to Stellantis’ Chief Financial Officer Natalie Knight. “There could be some point in the future when we look at what’s the best home for [Maserati],” said Knight.

Oh dear.

But why the grim outlook? Per Stellantis’ report, Maserati sold just 6,500 vehicles during the first half of 2024. Even if one says that Maserati is a niche automaker, that is still a shockingly low total as even a couple of boutique automakers get close to those numbers.

Even more worrying for Maserati is the sales dip. During the same period last year, the Italian automaker managed to shift 15,300 units worldwide. The sales performance this year presents an alarming crash of over 50%.

There is a glimmer of hope for the brand, however. There’s the all-new GranTurismo and GranCabrio, along with the Grecale to attempt to grab some sales from the German establishment. But even then, it seems those cars aren't raking in the numbers.

There are a couple of all new models expected soon, but those might still be years away. Unless its mainstream models get a dramatic uptick in sales, it looks like Maserati will have tough times ahead of it.
