Nissan will be consolidating its global design operations with the closure and downsizing of select studios in multiple regions. This comes as the latest phase of the brand’s organizational overhaul, Re:Nissan. With this recovery plan in full swing, Nissan aims to return to profitability by 2027.

Central Nissan Design offices based in San Diego, California, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, will be shut down as their respective operations will be diluted to other studios. Meanwhile, studios in England and Japan will be downsized; however, Nissan has not revealed exactly how many employees will be affected.

All design operations will then be funneled into the remaining five hubs in Los Angeles, Shanghai, and the reduced offices in London, Tokyo, and Atsugi. The Nissan Global Design Center will remain in Atsugi, as it continues to serve as the lead studio for the brand.

According to Re:Nissan, the company will need to save about P193.53 billion in order to be profitable in the next couple of years. The plan has then shut down two manufacturing plants with five more closures in the pipeline. Overall, about 20,000 employees will lose their jobs through Re:Nissan.

Shortly after announcing its global design realignment, Nissan canceled this year’s Nismo Festival, likely in another effort to save money. While new releases are still on the way, it remains to be a bleak season for Nissan and its employees.
