Mazda has decided to extend the production of the final RX-8 model by 1,000 units due to the large number of orders that the Japanese carmaker has received for the car.
Known as the RX-8 Spirit R, the special-edition model was initially limited to just 1,000 after it first went on sale in November 2011. Mazda, however, thought it best to extend the car's production by producing 1,000 more units after it received orders for the special edition "from a variety of customers of all ages including sports car fans and rotary engine enthusiasts."
According to Mazda, the six-speed manual transmission variant is the most popular model as it accounts for 66 percent of the total orders, while the choice of exterior color is equally divided between Aluminum Metallic, Sparkling Black Mica and Crystal White Pearl Mica.
As of the end of March 2012, Mazda has produced a total of 192,094 units of the RX-8. Despite the upswing of demand for the RX-8 Spirit R, Mazda still plans to end its production in June 2012.
