The Department of Energy has set a new goal: 7,000 EV charging stations around the Philippines by 2028. And the country is about a tenth of the way there.

There are currently 912 operational EV charging stations in the country, most of which are in gas stations, parking lots, and other commercial centers around Metro Manila.

The Ayala Corporation’s mobility arm, ACMobility, likely has the largest local charging network, with at least 64 active stations. Tesla Philippines currently has three stations around Metro Manila, with one on the way at the EDSA Shangri-La Plaza.

Several commercial developers like SM and Robinsons Malls have also added EV chargers in their mall parking lots. And while these seem few and far between, Shell, Unioil, Petron, and other gas stations have also set up charging stations.

To confirm the DOE’s new initiative, Energy Utilization Management Bureau director Patrick Aquino said: “Our goal of deploying over 7,000 EV charging stations by 2028 is ambitious but achievable. By combining infrastructure development with public engagement, we can accelerate the transition to EVs and build a cleaner, more sustainable transportation sector.”

Later this month, the DOE will be releasing the ‘Implementing Guidelines on Obligations of Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) Providers and EVCS Requirements, Specifications, and Interconnectivity (IG-ORSI).’

While that is a mouthful, those guidelines will include pertinent information for those contributing to the country’s EV infrastructure. Safety standards, investment opportunities, and market studies will be covered in the document.

The DOE is also planning to roll out a series of public consultations to better understand accessibility and convenience for EV users, as well as to ensure the reliability of power systems, and other charging requirements. Those consultations are scheduled to be conducted within this quarter.
