The Department of Transportation has been prompted to study new and increased insurance policies for private vehicles by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Marcos was previously called upon by the Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (ALTODAP) to overhaul the country’s vehicle insurance policies, following the recent crashes on SCTEX and NAIA Terminal 1. ALTODAP urged the president to find some unification between Compulsory Third-Party Liability Insurance for private vehicles and Passenger Personal Accident Insurance for PUVs.

Under CTPL, victims and survivors of road incidents involving private vehicles are entitled to a maximum of P200,000. ALTODAP then claims that the P200,000 sum is divided among the concerned parties.

With PPAI, the families of deceased victims can be given up to P400,000 for every fatality, while those left with injuries can be issued up to P100,000 each. ALTODAP aims to raise CTPL payouts to match PPAI.

As of this writing, the DOTr has yet to make an official statement on its insurance studies. This comes at a timely season for the DOTr, as the agency has committed to reforming the transportation systems in the Philippines. Recently, the agency and the LTO began its mandatory drug testing program for PUV drivers, starting with Solid North Transit.

As that and other road safety enforcement initiatives are rolled out, the DOTr has also commented on the revival of the No Contact Apprehension Program. While that will need another round in the Supreme Court, the DOTr has stressed its effectiveness in compelling motorists to follow road safety laws and regulations.
