It looks like the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) PUV Modernization Program is right on track.

The transport agency, together with representatives from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), was recently in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu to hand over 25 of 100 new solar E-jeepney units. These environment-friendly vehicles are expected to serve 40,000 of the area's commuters.

Star 8 Green Technology Corporation, the manufacturer of these E-Jeepney units, says that these vehicles will be the first of their kind to start plying routes in Region 7.

The company also estimates that this program will generate about 400 jobs, adding that regular tricycle and jeepney operators have already voluntarily stopped plying routes affected by the units’ arrival in support of the government's PUV Modernization Program.

“Nobody will be displaced but a lot of Filipinos will be given a decent, respectable and professional job,” the company said in a statement released on Facebook.

“The vehicles will be plying the loop routes of Lapu-Lapu City Public Market-Babag-Cordova-Marigondon-Crossing Basak-Gun-ob-Lapu-Lapu City Public Market; and Lapu-Lapu City Public Market-Pusok-Mepz-Marigondon-Crossing Basak-Gun-ob-Lapu-Lapu City Public Market,” the DOTr says in its announcement.
