Heads-up, commuters: In celebration of our 127th Independence Day, the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 train systems will offer free rides on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 7am to 9am and from 5pm to 7pm.

Since June 12 is a national holiday, LRT-1 operator Light Rail Manila Corporation has announced that it will follow its holiday operating hours. The trains will start moving at 5am, with the last trains leaving from Dr. Santos Station and Fernando Poe Jr. Station 9:30pm and 9:45pm, respectively. The other train system operators have yet to confirm if they will follow suit with the implementation of a holiday schedule.

If you’ve used Metro Manila’s train systems recently, you might have noticed some big changes throughout its various stations. Secretary Vince Dizon of the Department of Transportation has mandated the removal of X-ray security scanning at all stations to speed up foot traffic. Instead, the Philippine Coast Guard has been providing security, along with canine units.

The DOTr has also announced that more cashless payment systems will be coming to the train systems. Right now, Beep cards are predominantly accepted, while Mastercard-chipped cards can be used within the LRT-1 system. GCash and more debit and credit card payment options are set to roll out in July later this year.
