So, the Skyway Stage 3 extension project has all but wrapped up. What do we look forward to in terms of infrastructure next? Right now, it appears the LRT-1 Extension Project might be worth paying attention to.
Once this project is done, it will extend the train line all the way to Bacoor, Cavite, adding 11 new stations in the process. What’s more, the upgrade is expected to increase the LRT-1’s passenger capacity to 800,000 passengers per day from just 300,000 currently, as well as to make travel to Bacoor from Baclaran possible in just 25 minutes.
LRT-1 extension partial operability eyed for 2021
Exciting stuff, but this could still be a while off. The extension project was initially scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2021, but this estimate was before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr), however, assures the public that partial operability will indeed happen within the year. In fact, the agency has just taken delivery of the first batch of new train cars set to ply the rail line once the extension project is completed. Look:
The train cars you see above were manufactured in Spain and Mexico, and a total of 120 units are expected to ply the LRT-1 line once it’s completed. In a statement, DOTr head Arthur Tugade shared how long it has taken to finally get this project off the ground.
“Nineteen years ago, this project was started,” Tugade shared, adding that his agency has been pushing hard for its progress under the current administration. “That is why today, we see the steps of the whole realization of this project—partial operability within this year, by accepting the trains and the cars.”
Again, a lot can happen between now and the project’s completion, but if the DOTr gets this thing up and running even partially within the year, we’ll be thoroughly impressed. Are you looking forward to trying these things out as well?
