The Baclaran Station of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) has been recently equipped with an air-conditioned waiting room to help commuters stay cool. This new space comes right in time as the weather in Metro Manila is expected to get even warmer.

Inside, the cooling box features a pair of bench seats and a wide window that looks onto the tracks. While this space is open to all commuters, Light Rail Manila (LRMC) has ensured that senior citizens, PWDs, and passengers with children will be given priority.

The operator of the LRT-1 collaborated with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries–Mahajak Air Conditioners to build this space. With an air-conditioning-unit-themed superhero printed on the waiting room, it looks like the LRT-1 is ready to combat the summer heat.

LRMC is also gearing up to take over the construction of the Unified Grand Central Station (UGCS) on North Avenue in Quezon City. The operator’s formal pitch is nearing approval, while the Department of Transportation aims to have the station operational by 2027. Once fully completed, the UGCS will integrate the LRT-1, MRT-3, and the MRT-7 systems, providing better interconnectivity between Metro Manila’s train lines.

In the meantime, we hope to see more efforts to keep commuters comfortable as the weather continues to worsen. Stay cool, everyone.
