LTO: Improvised plates must meet LTO specifications

If you’re renewing your car’s registration this year, you should know that there are certain guidelines you need to follow. Chief among them, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) reiterates, is the display of an improvised license plate in lieu of the actual one.

The backlog of official license plates has been a problem for the government organization for some time. Last year, the LTO began distributing overdue plates from 2016. New cars registered since then have plates already. But some of the older registrations still don't.

The LTO issued a memorandum two days ago reminding its offices and employees to adhere to the guidelines outlined in a previous memorandum from January 2017. The reminder reads:

As such, no certification or verification shall be required from the MV/MC owner as long as the copy of Offical Receipt (OR) and Certificate of Registration (CR) is presented and improvised plate is attached as per LTO specifications.

Take note of those last three words, guys. Even the temporary plates have certain specs that need to be met for registration purposes. Part of these requirements include the use of reflective sturdy material and Arial Black font. You can view the specific measurements for both vehicle and motorcycle license plates in the images below. Just something to keep in mind to save you some hassle once you line up at the LTO for renewal.
