Accessorizing and personalizing a car is fun, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of safety. One shining example of an accessory compromising safety are the flashing brake lights. We’re thankful that we’re seeing less of them these days, but something else might soon take its place.

Chances are, you’ve encountered those rear-facing lights that practically doubles as a flashbang grenade. They’re blinding, to say the least, and ruin the visibility for motorists stuck behind vehicles equipped with it.

LTO

Now, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has something to say about it. Following a viral photo, the LTO has expressed concern about the matter, going as far as placing an alarm on the vehicle involved and a show cause order.

While the lights are hazardous, is there an actual offense according to the law? Per the LTO, there are violations to the provisions of Presidential Decree No. 96 (penalized under Item II (d) of Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01), and Republic Act No. 4136, particularly Section 48 (Reckless Driving) and for being an Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle (Section 27.a).

Hindi natin alam kung ano ang tumatakbo sa utak ng may-ari ng sasakyan na ito na magpakabit ng nakakasilaw na ilaw na ganito. Bawal po yan dahil it can compromise road safety lalo na sa gabi. We already issued a show cause order against the registered owner of the vehicle wherein he was also advised to surrender the license of the driver using the car at the time of the incident,” said LTO assistant secretary, Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II.

The LTO is currently investigating the matter and are in the process of identifying the owner/driver of the vehicle that’s said to be a Toyota FJ Cruiser. Once identified, the owner of the vehicle will be asked why they shouldn’t be charged with the violations mentioned, as well as present the OR/CR. The vehicle in question will also be required to undergo an inspection.
