Team East, the car-free Sundays initiative is coming to your hood—and it’s starting this weekend.
Beginning March 2, 2025, Marikina City will launch car-free Sundays on Gil Fernando Avenue. Specifically, the stretch of Gil Fernando Avenue from the corner of Guerilla Street (Xeland Marikina) to Comedor Restaurant will be closed to vehicular traffic on Sundays from 6am to 10am.

“Iwan muna ang sasakyan sa bahay at sama-sama tayo sa isang mas ligtas, mas masaya, at mas people-centered na kalsada para sa lahat!” reads the announcement from the Marikina City Public Information Office.

For those visiting from neighboring cities to take part in the event and check out the establishments along and near Gil Fernando, the local government has also provided a guide to available parking areas. Visitors arriving in cars may park along sections of Aquilina Street, Buenviaje Street, E. Mendoza Street, 6th Street, and 7th Street. But really, just leave your car at home if you can to embrace the spirit of the event, and to better appreciate Marikina City’s clean environment, wide and unobstructed sidewalks, and cyclist-friendly streets.
