Some bad news: The opening of the Santa Monica-Lawton Bridge, also referred to as the BGC-Ortigas Bridge, has been delayed.
The upcoming piece of infrastructure is opening in June instead of May. Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) head Mark Villar shared the new project timeline on Facebook over the weekend, saying the agency is targetting to open the structure partially on Independence Day, June 12.
“Ang target po namin dito ay June 12. So, gusto ko talagang tapusin by Independence Day. Mukhang kayang kaya naman yung target. Nakikita niyo kaya talagang 24/7 nagtratrabaho dito sa bridge para matapos kaagad,” Villar said in a Facebook Live video.
Good news? Villar shared the update during his first drive-through of the BGC-Ortigas Bridge. The official entered via the project’s Kalayaan side and ends the video a short while later near Brixton Street on the Pasig side. Watch:
Granted, the structure still isn’t complete in the footage. Villar runs over several large bumps and drives at a rather slow pace on account of all the construction still going on and personnel scattered along the bridge. Still, it should give you a good idea of just how much time can be saved crossing from BGC to Pasig once it opens partially next month.
Let’s see if the DPWH will be able to finish this project by the time Independence Day 2021 rolls around. Anyone else here excited to try driving across this thing?
