The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will soon have a new chairman.

According to a report by CNN Philippines, former Mandaluyong City mayor Benjamin ‘Benhur’ Abalos is set to become the transport agency’s new head. The 58-year-old has already confirmed his appointment and is expected to take his oath of office later today.

Abalos will be taking the reins of the MMDA less than a week after the agency’s late chairman, Danilo Lim, passed away earlier this month. The MMDA has yet to give an official statement or confirmation regarding the appointment, however.

Prior to this, Abalos served two terms as Mandaluyong City’s mayor. He isn’t the first Abalos to helm the MMDA, either, as his father Benjamin Abalos Sr. headed the agency in the early 2000s.

With all the changes and new traffic schemes brought on by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s safe to say the new MMDA chairman is going to have his work cut out for him from the get-go. Do you think Abalos is the right choice to take over the agency? Let us know in the comments.
