As you may have all heard by now, there were massive gatherings on EDSA this week. Specifically, along White Plains Avenue in Quezon City. The traffic that ensued was the stuff of headlines, and many citizens took to social media to voice out their concerns following these events.

One thing that we didn’t notice, however, was the amount of litter that had been accumulating in the area over these past few days. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority just released the numbers, and it’s quite shocking: 36.585 tons of garbage was collected on White Plains this week.

Considering the rallies on White Plains only lasted for a couple of days before its permits got revoked by the Quezon City government, that’s quite a huge number. For even more context, it amounted to 103.6 cubic meters worth of all sorts of trash and debris.

Take note, however, that the photos here were from the Facebook page of the Quezon City local government unit, which also had personnel on the ground during the rallies for continuous cleanups. This makes us wonder if the MMDA’s total was only from after the rally or an accumulated total, but we digress.

The MMDA’s Metro Parkways Clearing Group took lead in the cleanup. It also rearranged the concrete barriers in the area, specifically the ones separating the EDSA Busway from the thoroughfare’s main lanes.

If you want to see the before-and-after pictures from the MMDA, check out the post below. Does anyone here have any stories from EDSA this week that they’d like to share? Tell us in the comments.
