Commuters from all over Metro Manila have long expressed their need for longer operating hours across the Metro’s train systems, especially during this holiday season. As train stations fill up with shoppers, travelers, and other commuters, the increase in foot traffic seems to require extended operating hours to accommodate the influx.
Many have commented about a 24-hour operation scheme for the MRT-3, and even just a general 12am cut-off for the LRT and MRT lines. However, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has rebutted these ideas with the daily maintenance and safety routines that the trains need. There is simply no time for the trains to run longer.
The DOTr then has compromised with commuters by extending the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 operations by a couple of hours from December 16 to December 23. According to the DOTr, this extension should be able to accommodate the surge while ensuring that the trains can still go through the proper inspections.

For those riding the LRT-1, the last trip from Fernando Poe Jr (formerly Roosevelt) will leave at 10:45pm, while the last ride from Dr. Santos Avenue will depart at 10:30pm.
Those using the LRT-2 can hop on the last trip from Antipolo at 9:30pm, and the last ride from Recto at 10pm.
Commuters on the MRT-3 can take the last trip from North Avenue at 10:34pm while those coming from Pasay City, can take the last ride out of Taft Avenue at 11pm.
These seem to be the final extensions that the DOTr can make without sacrificing time for maintenance and safety routines. According to the DOTr, extending operations and compromising further, will also jeopardize the safety of the riding public.
