Midway through 2022, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) removed the number-coding exemption for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs). Now, it appears the agency might revert some of these changes.

According to a report by Inquirer.net, in a recent hearing with the House Committee on Ways and Means, suggestions to include senior citizens in the coding exemption were floated. MMDA acting chairman Don Artes then responded in a Radyo 630 interview that the agency receives many requests for exemptions, so the MMDA will have to “study carefully the impact of the proposal.”

Artes added that if seniors were given exemptions, PWDs and those with special children might also request for the same privileges.  “When such an exemption is opened, many more will follow, defeating the purpose of our number coding scheme,” said Artes.

The MMDA has made few changes to its number-coding scheme over the past few years, and at least for now, it doesn’t look like it’ll be making any substantial changes soon. In any case, here’s a full guide on the current number-coding scheme being implemented across the metro.
