Itching to go out and watch a movie already? Well, you’ll soon be able to from the comfort and safety of your own personal vehicle—at least if you live in or are willing to drive all the way to Pampanga.
SM Pampanga has announced that it will be opening a drive-in movie theater in its amphitheater at the end of the month, with tickets scheduled to go on sale soon. Look:
It’s still unknown exactly what films will be screened here, whether it’s new releases or older movies. We’re guessing, however, that it’s probably the latter on account of movie releases being delayed left and right. There’s been no mention of what the setup will look like, either, and whether it will offer modern drive-in movie amenities like transmitting audio via Bluetooth.
SM Pampanga has revealed, though, a P400 drive-in theater bundle that includes popcorn, bottled water, and hotdogs. The mall is also recommending a two-person occupancy per vehicle for the best viewing experience.
Maybe SM Malls can do a Walmart and open a bunch of them, even if only for a limited time? According to a report by the Washington Post, the drive-in theater business is booming in the US on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. Watching a movie in separate cars is, you know, a lot safer than being packed into an air-conditioned room with hundreds of potential asymptomatic (or not) people. Maybe there’s a real business opportunity here to be taken advantage of.
We’d definitely like to see more drive-in theaters pop up here in the Philippines. Safety is nice, but we’re guessing plenty of people would try it out for either the novelty or nostalgia factor. Anyone else here miss going to the movies?
