If you live in or go to Metro Manila often, chances are, you’re familiar with how some areas have ‘spaghetti’ cables and dangling wires everywhere. Sadly, they’re common sightings in the city. But more than just being eyesores, they’re quite dangerous.

Different unpleasant scenarios could occur—such as a large vehicle getting tangled in dangling wires—and these are what the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Metro Manila Council (MMC) are trying to avoid with their new initiative.

The MMC has “approved in principle” a resolution that would urge LGUs to pass ordinances that would “regulate and monitor the installation and maintenance of distribution lines” as well as eliminate these problematic cables across the capital.

Noong isang araw ay may bumagsak na poste dahil sa salasalabat na wire at nagdulot ng mabigat na trapiko,” said MMDA acting chairman Atty. Don Artes during a recent briefing. “Walang nakadaan dahil nakaharang sa daan...kailangan nang maiwasan ang ganito para hindi na umabot sa pagkawala ng buhay.”

Meralco pointed out that removing these wires would be difficult as they cannot easily determine which are operational and which are not. This would lead to power disruptions in certain areas, resulting in various complaints from affected constituents. Telcos and Meralco will have to work with LGUs to properly trace which wires and cables can be removed.

Whatever the case will be, the fact remains that these wires and cables are hazards to road users and residents within their vicinities, and they must be removed as soon as possible.
