Lately, we’ve heard tollway authorities apologizing for and justifying the monstrous traffic congestion caused by the never-ending construction work on their facilities. It’s a bitter pill we have to swallow.

But there are some efforts being undertaken by these operators to ease the congestion now that Christmastime is fast approaching, and here’s the latest: The Skyway O&M Corporation (Autosweep RFID) and the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (Easytrip RFID) are waiving all the requirements for RFID applications for owners of both cars and motorcycles.

And we mean all requirements. No need to show your driver’s license as well as photocopies of your vehicle registration, deed of sale, and so on. The new process also spares motorists from filling out lenghty application forms.

Not too long  ago, billboards were set up to announce this new process, but it seems motorists have not been paying attention. So, the tollway personnel are now going the extra mile and approaching motorists directly.

As you’re lined up at the toll booths, do not be surprised when a uniformed staffer walks over to explain the new process for RFID applications. Our informants say that one tollway company will reach out to motorcycle riders during the 6th Heritage Invitational Ride to Ilocos Sur (hosted by Ronald Singson and supported by Wheeltek) on November 29, 2019, to offer RFIDs to thousands of participants in the event.

If you express interest, you will be asked to pull over to a safe area, and the RFID sticker will be installed on the windscreen (motorcycle), windshield (car), or headlight of your vehicle. After you pay for the minimum load of P300, the tollway personnel will just record the card number and the account number of your RFID sticker, and you’re ready to use the exclusive ETC lane—but always make sure you have enough load before hitting the tollways.

When topping up your RFID account at reloading stations or ATMs, you can just indicate your account number or vehicle license plate.

Here’s another electronic wonder: The tollway personnel can also interconnect your Easytrip and Autosweep RFID accounts on the spot. Just approach any of them at the toll exits. This will save you a lot of time because you’ll be able to avoid manual cash transactions and avoid traffic buildup at toll plazas.

Speaking of time, the whole process to install RFID tags takes less than 15 minutes. Guys, what are you waiting for?
