Good news for commuting students: Starting in September, the white-colored beep Card will be available to all enrolled students. Previously, that particular card was only issued to PWDs and senior citizens, with students having to line up at the station office to purchase discounted single journey tickets.

With the white beep Card, the 50% fare discount for students, PWDs, and senior citizens on the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 train lines will be automatically applied at the turnstile—eliminating the need to wait in line at the ticket counter.

For the remainder of August, students will still need to purchase discounted tickets at the counter, but queues should move faster as the Department of Transportation has scrapped the forms previously required for discounts. Students just need to present their valid school ID to the ticketing officer to receive a discounted ticket.

The DOTr has also commissioned 300,000 more standard beep Cards to be issued to solve ongoing availability issues. Recurring incidents of scalping and hoarding have consistently haunted the beep Card system, but transportation secretary Vince Dizon promised that the shortage will be solved in the next week.

“By next week, wala na tayong shortage ng beep Cards. beep Card will be completing a delivery of 300,000 additional cards across MRT-3, LRT-1 at LRT-2. ‘Yun ang na-compute nating shortage,” said Dizon.
