Porsche has finally proven a hybrid's system worth and capability in an endurance race as its updated 911 GT3 R Hybrid topped the fourth round of the Nürburgring Long Distance Championship to claim its first-ever win.

One of the advantages shown by the GT3 R Hybrid against its opponents was that it required only two pit stops while the rest had to refuel three times.

"We're very pleased with the technical level of the vehicle and the reliability of the hybrid system," said Porsche Motorsport chief, Hartmut Kristen. "Compared to our rivals, we saved one pit stop and with less external energy input our lap times were just as quick. This is what we mean by Porsche Intelligent Performance."

The updated 911 GT3 R Hybrid is essentially the Version 2.0 of the original car that was first unveiled in the Geneva Motor Show in February 2010. One priority in the development of the original car was to bring its weight down by 50kgs, lowering the upgraded version's curb weight to just 1,300kgms. The output of the car's two electric motors has also been pushed from 60 to 75 kilowatts or the equivalent of 80 to a little over 100hp each. So for seconds at a time, the driver has approximately 200hp at his disposal which is reportedly the equivalent of 23 kilowatts or 32hp of additional conventional power per lap of the Nurburgring's famed Nordschleife loop.

Depending on the programming, the electrical power can automatically be activated through the throttle pedal or the driver can choose to manually call up this extra power when overtaking on the track.

"Our Hybrid-911 ran like clockwork," said Porsche works driver Marco Holzer from Germany. "Aside from the reliable technology and low fuel consumption, the key to success today was that we all drive at similarly high speeds and we didn't make any mistakes," added Austrian teammate Richard Lietz. Completing the team's driving triumvirate is American Patrick Long.

The next race the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid will compete in is the Nürburgring 24 hour race scheduled from June 25 to 26.
