Not a stranger to being one of the fastest in motorsports or multisport, Formula 1 superstar driver Jenson Button once again produced a podium finish at Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines held in Cebu. Winning second place in the 30-34 male age group category, the one-time F1 champion competed alongside professional triathletes and multisport age-groupers from all over the world.
Button conquered 1.9km of open-water swimming in 29 minutes and 7 seconds, the fourth-best time in his age group. The Brit had the fastest 90km bike leg in his age category, tackling the course in 2 hours, 27 minutes and 22 seconds. He ran the half marathon (21.1km) in 1 hour, 39 minutes and 37 seconds, which is the second-best time in his division.
The McLaren driver completed the race course in 4 hours, 40 minutes and 23 seconds, making him the 17th athlete overall to cross the finish line. He was just six places behind the first Filipino elite athlete, August Benedicto, who finished in 4 hours, 34 minutes and 55 seconds.
Button completed the race faster in 2012, when he had a finish time of 4 hours, 35 minutes and 49 seconds--earning him third place that year--but he placed better in his age group this year. He replied to a tweet: "Thanks, mate. A tough day but great result for all! Spud first, me second."
The top three elite males were Brent McMahon (3:59:05), Sam Betten (4:07:30) and Casey Munro (4:13:18), while the top three elite females were Caroline Steffen (4:32:34), Rebecca Hoschke (4:38:34) and Belinda Granger (4:48:32).
