At the moment, there’s only one Formula 1 Grand Prix race held in Southeast Asia. Of course, that race is in Singapore at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

But for some of the more seasoned fans of the sport, there is one track that they wish would come back someday. We are, of course, talking about the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.

In case you missed it, rumors have been swirling that F1 might be coming back to the Sepang International Circuit. Various reports have claimed that Petronas, the oil company that has secured naming rights until 2026, is spearheading that effort. Now, Petronas has set the record straight.

The oil firm has flatly denied the recent report, releasing a statement in response to that. “Petronas refers to the news reports published on January 31, 2024 on the potential return of the Formula One Grand Prix to Sepang, Malaysia, in 2026. We would like to confirm that there have been no discussions on bringing the sport back to the Petronas Sepang International Circuit.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors of F1’s comeback in Malaysia. Sepang was dropped from the F1 calendar amidst rising costs and lower ticket sales in 2017. Since then, there have been frequent rumors and reports of it coming back but these have been debunked over the years.

That said, it’s safe to say that there have been fans wishing for its return but we’ll only believe it once there’s official word from F1 and track officials.
