Volkswagen Motorsport has wrapped up the 2014 World Rally Championship's manufacturers title with its 1-2-3 finish at last weekend's Rally Australia. With three races still to go in the season, the finish makes it the earliest the manufacturers title has been won in 25 years.
Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia led the Volkswagen Motorsport team to the top spot of the podium, with teammates Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila taking second place. With teammates Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Floene in the third Polo WRC finishing in third place, Volkswagen Motorsport's total points tally of 348 puts it 333 points ahead of the Citroen World Rally Team, making the team's lead unassailable despite three races still remaining in the calendar.
The only thing left to be decided in the remaining three rallies are the drivers and co-drivers titles between Ogier and Latvala, and Ingrassia and Anttila, respectively.
"What a way to put the icing on the cake at the end of such an impressive season," said Volkswagen Motorsport director Jost Capito. "Winning the manufacturers title with a one-two-three--it doesn’t get any better. It is always more difficult to successfully defend the world championship title than it is to win it in the first place. What the team has achieved this season--and the extent to which it has improved--demands my utmost respect."
