Which Mercedes EV is this?

We know it can get a bit confusing. There is the Mercedes-Benz EQA, EQB, EQE, and EQS with a bunch of variants thrown in the middle. Overall, it actually makes for a comprehensive lineup in the country’s luxury EV market. This specific one, the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ AMG-Line, drives in the midsize sedan segment, comparable in size to the BMW 5-series/i5 and the like.
Wait, AMG?

It’s ‘AMG-Line,’ not exactly AMG. That just means this Merc received some aesthetic upgrades from the carmaker’s performance division. Outside, each rim has a subtle ‘AMG’ stamp, along with a few trim differences on the bumper. Open the door and you’ll notice the AMG-branded floor mats and those racing-red seatbelts.
There is no AMG branding on the steering wheel, which confirms that the motors on the EV did not receive any modifications or tweaks. Although, the suspension on the EQE has been stiffened to accommodate the heavier battery.

So how does it drive?

That suspension makes the riding experience feel more cushy than sporty. In terms of performance, it effortlessly glides to 80kph although the 288hp motor makes its presence felt beyond that. The steering might have also been tweaked as it seemingly feels more direct than other Mercs. However, turning and maneuvering were still on point.
There is also a lot of extra weight on the pedals, perhaps to simulate the sensation of a combustion-powered car. Both the accelerator and brake needed an extra push, but it does make one more mindful about their speed—EVs can get dangerously fast in silence.
All put together, the true essence of the EQE might actually be experienced in the backseat. That stiff suspension feels buttery smooth, especially in the back. It’s no S-Class, but the bench seat is angled in such a way that it engages you for a fast drive and is also comfortable and soft to lull you to sleep. The legroom on the EQE is surprisingly wide and makes a strong case for midsize sedan supremacy.
And of course, those in the backseat do not have to acclimate themselves to the EV’s heavier-than-normal driving style.
Who exactly is the EQE for?

It’s hard to say. I wouldn’t exactly call it sporty, and it also lacks the bank vault solidity that one expects from the three-pointed star. Granted, in the Philippines, the midsize sedan segment is in limbo with the luxury side floating even further away from the market.
Perhaps those who often switch between the driver’s seat and backseat would find the EQE to be an interesting choice. It packs an engaging driving experience that’s good for around 650km, but a deeply comfortable backseat with dual climate controls and a pair of USB-C ports.
How much does it cost?

The Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ is priced at P6.290 million, which fluctuates depending on what side of the Silver Arrows you’re looking it. The EQE is about P1 million and some more than a C180 but is about P10 million cheaper than an S-Class. While this EV tries to ride the line between sportiness and executive comfort, it may be up to the buyer and their personal needs to decide if it is a fair price.
