The BYD Seal 5 DM-i has been reenergized with an improved battery and a longer driving range. While many creature comforts and premium touches have been removed, the updated model more than makes up for it in price and performance.
This release also marks the first time that BYD Cars Philippines has launched an ‘Essential’ variant of one of its models. Typically, the brand’s base trims are labeled ‘Dynamic,’ but the Seal 5 DM-i Essential offers an even more simplified package.

While a Dynamic variant is included, BYD will notably not be selling a Premium version of this updated Seal 5 DM-i. It looks like the brand is focusing strongly on the entry-level market for this iteration of its plug-in hybrid sedan. Read on to learn more about the 2027 Seal 5 DM-i.

Exterior of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i 2027

BYD has updated the Seal 5 with a new fascia similar to those of the Sealion 6 DM-i and the fully electric Seal Performance sedan. Its nose now slopes downward, with design curves and thinner headlights to match.
At the back, the tailgate and the accompanying lights haven’t changed much from the previous-generation Seal 5 DM-i, save for a more modern lighting pattern. Redesigned 16-inch rollers have also been equipped, with varying designs between the Essential and Dynamic variants. Those with eagle eyes will also notice the NFC tag on the upper trim level.
Overall, the new sedan measures 4,780mm long, 1,837mm wide, and 1,515mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,718mm. Buyers can then choose finishes in Deep Sea Blue, Cosmos Black, Artic White, and Harbour Gray.
Interior of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i 2027

Inside, the Seal 5 DM-i Essential and Dynamic share a 10.1-inch main screen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel. The five-seater cabin also houses a four-speaker sound system, with two USB-A ports and a single USB-C outlet. Regarding cargo capacity, the Seal 5 DM-i has 522 liters at the ready, but this can be expanded to 1,295 liters with the rear seats folded.
Those who opt for the Essential variant will get fabric upholstery and a urethane-wrapped steering wheel, while those interested in the Dynamic will be paying extra for leather. The Dynamic trim also comes with additional side curtain airbags; the Essential only has airbags on the driver and front-passenger areas.
Powertrain of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i 2027

The Seal 5 DM-i is propelled by a single electric motor and a 7.42kWh Blade battery. On the go, the battery pack is charged by the on-board 1.5-liter gasoline generator, which also extends the driving range. The fuel tank has a capacity of 65 liters.
Speaking of driving range, BYD says the new Seal 5 DM-i can drive up to 55km on just electric power. With the generator kicking in, combined range is advertised at a whopping 1,600km. Interestingly, the fuel economy run conducted by BYD Cars Philippines actually yielded 2,181.4km on a single tank of gas and a fully charged battery.

In terms of power, there is 161hp and 210Nm of torque on tap, with Economy, Normal, Sport, and Snow drive modes available. Notably, this sedan is only compatible with AC chargers, with a maximum charging rate of 3.3kW. BYD claims that it should be able to charge from 15% to 100% in just 2.5 hours.
Supporting this powertrain is a front-mounted MacPherson strut suspension system and a torsion beam at the rear. Stopping power is delivered by ventilated disc brakes up front and solid disc brakes at the back.
Extra features of the BYD Seal 5 DM-i 2027

The Seal 5 DM-i comes standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a rearview camera, four rear-mounted parking sensors, and basic cruise control. There aren’t any other significant differences between the two variants, except for the ones we previously mentioned.
