I’ve always wanted to try film cameras, but the hassle of developing and printing the shots keeps me from buying one. Plus, I couldn’t justify the idea of buying film rolls and risk missing a shot because of wrong exposure or any other settings that are easy to mess up. And since I won a Camp Snap (Lazada link) from our team’s Christmas party, I’m now even more inclined to stay away from film.

So what is this device with the cool aesthetic? At first, you might mistake it for a film camera, but it actually has an 8-megapixel 1/3.2" digital sensor. The 4.8mm (35mm equivalent) f/1.8 lens is perfect for capturing random things like a dinner date or a pristine 2000 Honda Civic owned by BanaweBoy. There is an LED flash for low-light shooting, or if you just want to be more playful with your shots. We also appreciate the digital shutter sound it produces.

It can shoot up to 500 photos per charge and its internal memory can save up to 2,000 photos. There is a counter at the back that records how many shots have been made. Transferring photos is also a breeze since it connects smoothly to computers and smartphones using a USB-C cable—no application necessary.

It is very light and it fits in small bags or even pockets. Yet, despite its weight, it actually feels solid. Camp Snap says there are no moving parts inside; that’s why it should survive a couple of drops, though we chose not to test it. One issue I found is that the adhesive in the leather part is not that strong, and I suspect it would wear out easily.

As one would expect, the Camp Snap is not about accuracy. Even older iPhones can produce sharper and more color-accurate photos than this camera. Some photos are properly exposed, others are not. Some photos are too warm, others look too pale. I now understand the fun of shooting using film cameras. All shots will look completely different.

There’s also the thrill of not knowing what the shot looks like hoping it would look good on print. Would I recommend the Camp Snap camera? That would be a resounding yes. It is perfect for capturing moments and having a taste of what taking photos felt like 30 years ago.
