Bagging four Oscar nominations for the 94th Academy Awards, Japan’s Drive My Car could soon follow in the footsteps of South Korea’s Parasite. The Japanese film has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, while director Ryusuke Hamaguchi was nominated for Best Director.
The film is a shoo-in for the Oscars’ top prizes and already has a number of accolades under its belt. Touted as one of the best films of 2021, it won Best Foreign Language Film at the 2022 Golden Globes, and three awards—including Best Screenplay—at the Cannes Film Festival.

A universal film that tackles grief and regret, Drive My Car is based on a short story written by the acclaimed Haruki Murakami. It follows director Yusuke Kafuku, played by Hidetoshi Nishijima, as he deals with the unexpected loss of his wife. He soon meets an actor who shares history with his late wife, and a driver who guides him along his long road to peace.
The film premiered in Cannes in July 2021, and was screened in the Philippines as part of the 2021 QCinema International Film Festival last December.
