Over the years, the Internet has gifted us many a treasure. But in all its years of existence, it has yet to produce a gem as beautiful as this: Honda’s beach lo-fi chill mix. I’m eternally grateful to my algorithm for sending this my way.
“What in the Chindogu is this?” Well, it’s not a quirky Japanese tool that can solve a mundane and minor problem, but it sure can make everyday life a little more pleasant. It’s exactly what you Internet-dwellers think it is: A mix of lo-fi music. In true lo-fi fashion, it’s on YouTube and comes with a completely unrelated retro-style video.

Okay, not totally unrelated. The title does say ‘Honda Beach Clean.’ See, it starts with an ASMR intro of a beach cleanup featuring Honda products, then it cuts to a cold start of an ATV. Cleaning resumes, then the chill music begins.

With the help of Google Translate, we were able to understand what exactly was happening here. The Honda Beach Clean-up Activities have been ongoing in Japan since 2006 and have covered over 300 beaches across the country. Over 7,000 locals and Honda Group employees join the clean-up yearly.
The clean-up also uses Honda’s ATVs that tow a proprietary cleaner that collects trash while minimizing impacts on beach creatures. The goal here is to “pass on beaches where everyone can walk barefoot to the next generation.” Beautiful.
As for the lo-fi mix, Honda says it wanted to come up with something that evoked a “calm yet positive feeling.” It combined the sounds of waves by the beach, machinery cleaning the coastline, and music, creating this mix that can accompany listeners throughout the day. Objective achieved, I think, as I myself have already listened to this more-than-two-hour clip multiple times as of this writing.
