Hyundai Motor Philippines surprised everyone by unveiling its Ioniq 9 electric SUV, right after it rolled out the new Palisade Hybrid. The full-size SUV market in the country doesn’t have a lot of players, and there are even fewer fully electric models. This puts the Ioniq 9 in a deeply niche segment, but its target market is quite common: Families looking for a fuel-efficient people carrier.

While the Palisade Hybrid may satisfy that market, the Ioniq 9 offers an intriguing proposition that is highlighted by a relatively low price and over 600km of driving range.

Variant and price

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 EV Calligraphy AWD Long Range comes in one variant, and therefore in one price. Stickering for P4.58 million, it strongly undercuts the Kia EV9, which comes in at P5.938 million.

However, HMPH announced that every Ioniq 9 in the Philippines will be made to order, with 39 different combinations for interior and exterior finishes. This kind of customization adds another unique selling point in favor of the Ioniq 9.

Exterior

As mentioned, the Ioniq 9 is listed as a full-size SUV. It measures in at 5,060mm long, 1,980mm wide, and 1,790mm tall, with about 174mm of ground clearance. It sits on 21-inch alloys, shod in 285/45R21 tires.

Its fascia is predominantly made of a cube-patterned LED light bar that spans the entire hood. Its long and wide impression is thanks to that hood, as it dramatically slopes down into the DRLs. More light blocks run down into the bumper, where they meet more metal.

Around the sides, there are protruding cameras in place of sideview mirrors that funnel footage onto screens on the other side of the front doors. Speaking of the doors, each handle is flushed into the sheet metal.

Out back, more light cubes drop down on each side of the powered tailgate. A separate light fixture makes up the rear foglamp, located by the rear bumper.

Interior

The Ioniq 9 also boasts a long wheelbase of 3,130mm, making space for a six-seater cabin with a panoramic sunroof. Each seat is dressed in leather with the rest of the cabin finished in soft-touch materials. The first two rows feature captain’s chairs, and then a two-passenger bench seat makes up the third row. The seats on the second row also slide back to fully extend the attached leg rests.

A 14-speaker system from Bose is also scattered throughout the interior. That audio system then draws from the main 12.3-inch infotainment screen. Right next to it is another similarly sized display, which serves as the digital instrument cluster. There are also three USB ports by the screens, and another four in the second and third rows.

Powertrain

Propelling the Ioniq 9 are dual permanent magnet synchronous motors that make 304hp and 605Nm of torque. The AWD system is powered by a 110.3kWh lithium-ion battery, which should be good for 600km of driving. It is then mated to a single-speed reduction gear transmission.

While its 0-100kph sprint is yet to be confirmed, other sources have claimed it to be as quick as 6.7sec.

Extra features

The Ioniq 9 features Vehicle-2-Load capabilities for emergencies and outdoor activities. And along with the seven USB ports in the cabin, there is a wireless charging pad and two power outlets. Passengers can also use the onboard UV-C tray to sterilize small items and devices.

The main infotainment display comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as voice recognition software. Hyundai’s full ADAS suite, SmartSense, is also communicated through the screens and controls around the cockpit. Functions like smart cruise control, parking assist, rear occupant alert, and surround-view monitoring are all in the system.

The driver and front passenger also get warming and ventilation on their seats, with the driver getting massage functions as well. As mentioned, second-row passengers do get leg rests, along with powered seat adjustment.
