In case you missed it, Nissan Philippines (NPI) finally launched its much-anticipated Z sports car. Of course, it’s now only natural that we compare it to its closest two-seater rival: the Toyota Supra.

For this spec-sheet brawl, we’ll be focusing on the automatic transmission variant of the Z since its Toyota rival is not available with a manual gearbox in the Philippine market.

The new Z measures 4,380mm long, 1,845mm wide, and 1,315mm tall, making it 1mm longer, 9mm narrower, and 21mm taller than the Supra. The Nissan rides on a 2,550mm wheelbase which is also 80mm longer than its Toyota rival. How practical are they? The new Z has a 241-liter cargo area, while the Supra has a 49-liter advantage.

The heart of the new Z is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 which pumps out 378hp and 475Nm of torque. Under the hood of the Supra is a 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged V6 which puts out 335hp and 500Nm of torque. Compared to the Toyota, the Nissan has more horsepower but less torque. The Z Premium A/T comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the Supra 3.0 is equipped with an eight-speed automatic tranny.

Like many recent models, the new Z comes with smartphone connectivity systems, while the local-spec Supra doesn’t. In the safety department, Toyota’s sports car has a standard driver’s knee airbag, while its Nissan rival doesn’t.

A little refresher for the Z and Supra. The new Z’s styling draws inspiration from past Zs, to be more specific, its styling was heavily influenced by the original S30 generation 240Z with hints of the Z32 generation 300ZX on its rear end. Toyota used its iconic ’90s Mk4 Supra and the classic 60s 2000GT as design inspirations for its Supra.

The Nissan’s latest sports car is built on an updated version of the 370Z’s FM platform. This is a shortened sports-car version of the platform used by the Skyline and its Infiniti twin. The Supra on the other hand is part of a joint venture between Toyota and BMW. The latest Supra is basically a Toyota-designed, Gazoo Racing-tuned coupe sibling of the BMW Z4 roadster. Like the Z4, the Supra is built by Magna Steyr in Austria.

Spec-wise, the two sports cars are closely matched on paper, but the same can’t be said about their prices. The new Z has a sticker price of P3,888,000, while the Supra carries a P5,396,000 price tag. That’s a huge P1,508,000 difference.
