Poll: Are automatic headlights important to you?

The feature is more attainable than ever

Last week, a shiny white Volkswagen Santana rolled into our office garage equipped with a pair of automatic headlights. The big deal? None, really—but this sedan got us thinking.

There was a time when one couldn’t even dream of having such a feature on a subcompact sedan, let alone one that costs less than P1 million. Back in the day, automatic headlights could only be found on more premium cars.

In the mid-’90s, you could find this feature in the Honda Legend, and maybe some luxury European models. On that note, is the feature—and similar ones like it, such as rain-sensing wipers—and the added convenience it provides now being taken for granted?

We ask because a mid-level test unit arrived without automatic headlights, but with a sunroof. Asked why a sunroof—which is still usually reserved for top-of-the-line or higher-spec variants—was prioritized, the manufacturer told us that consumers simply prefer it over having automatic headlights.

We can see why: A car with a sunroof has a more premium feel to it. But how often is one really going to drive one with it open?
