The local government unit of Quezon City recently opened its second basketball court–detention basin facility. Located in Barangay Tandang Sora, the 1,256m3 catchment (similar in size to an Olympic swimming pool) was built beneath a covered court that citizens can use for sports and other community activities.

The structure also houses a water-harvesting system, capable of collecting up to 15,000 liters of rainwater. In the same facility, the water can be filtered and then used for general cleaning and landscaping.

As mentioned, this complex is the second of its kind in Quezon City. It follows the initial facility that opened in Barangay Santa Monica earlier this year. And interestingly, that one has an even larger 1,700mdetention basin.

At the inauguration ceremony in Barangay Santa Monica, Mayor Joy Belmonte of Quezon City said the structure effectively “kills two birds with one stone,” as it provides protection against floods and a recreational space for citizens.

For these projects, the city has been working closely with the UP Resilience Institute in developing more practical flood-control solutions. In 2026, catchments and retention ponds in Quezon Memorial Circle and Vertis North have also been constructed to further mitigate flooding.

Belmonte further explained the city’s approach, as she said: “Dito sa QC, prayoridad po natin ang mga science-based and nature-based solutions upang matugunan ang suliraning dulot ng pagbaha.” Following this, the mayor also announced that a new detention basin is currently being built along flood-prone G. Araneta Avenue. City-wide dredging and declogging efforts are also being carried out.
