Seeing mechanical things in motion is one of those things we can file under the ‘oddly satisfying to watch’ category. Like seeing a high-pressure washer effortlessly remove dirt from heavily stained car, there’s just something about seeing a well-designed machine go through its motions that captures your attention. The effect is doubled when the device runs entirely without any kind of external power source.
It’s this fascination that likely explains why skeleton watches are popular among some watch aficionados. With a finely crafted mechanical movement placed behind an exposed face, it’s easy to get lost watching every little gear and wheel do its job. This new piece from Orient certainly fits that bill.
The Avante-garde Skeleton is part of Orient’s Sport collection under its Orient Star line. The case measures 43mm and is made from stainless-steel. On the dial are two open plates which show the inner workings of the movement below. The unexposed parts of the dial feature a honeycomb pattern and a gear-themed design to further emphasize the mechanical motif. Speaking of the movement, this particular one is built in-house and has a 50-hour power reserve. It’s accurate to +25sec/-15sec per day, and with a screw-down crown, the piece is water-resistant up to 100 meters.
The Avante-garde Skeleton is available in four variants: two stainless-steel versions with either a plain or black-painted dial, and two black- or bronze-plated versions with racing-style leather straps.
“The Avant-garde Skeleton, with its modern stylish design is an evolution of the Classic Skeleton, most evident in the model with red aluminum detailing contrasted against the hairline-finished black case and bezel. The combination of black base hue and vivid red accents continues on the openwork dial and the perforated leather strap, giving a tough and sharp overall appearance,” Orient says in the press material.
This piece would look right at home whether you’re outdoors being adventurous or dressed casually at work or out in the city. What do you think of this latest offering from the Japanese brand? Let us know in the comments.
