Out of all the bikes BMW Motorrad has built over the past century, there are a few that truly stand out, one of them being the R90 S. Apart from the brand’s 90th anniversary, it was also partly the namesake for the German marque’s modern-day classic roadster, the R nineT. It was the sporty bike of the ’70s that has always been considered one of the most sought-after BMW motorcycles.
Now, BMW Motorrad is paying homage to this icon with the new R12 S. Based on the R12 cruiser—the twin of the R nineT’s successor—this bike blends the brand’s neo-retro styling with the sporty look and lively colors of the R90 S.

“The defining design elements of our R12 S include the handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with the tinted windshield, the seat with contrast stitching, and the Lavaorange metallic paint finish as a nod to the legendary R90 S Daytona Orange from 1975,” said BMW Motorrad Design Alexander Buckan. “The design is perfectly complemented by details such as the red-laid 'S' on the side covers, the red double line, and the brushed and clear-lacquered aluminum surfaces of the tank and seat hump.”
In addition to the design, BMW Motorrad also included the Option 719 Classic II wheels with wire spokes and the blacked-out handlebar and fork tubes. The Bille packs Shadow and Shadow II also add special accents like the Avus black metallic matt cylinder head covers, the black footrest system with the foot brake and gearshift levers, and expansion tank covers for the front brake and clutch.
Other standard features in the R12 S come courtesy of the COmfort Package which includes hill-start assist, Shift Assistant Pro, heated grips, and cruise control. Adaptive cornering headlights are also available.
If you want to get one of these and wish to dress it up further, BMW Motorrad Accessories available for the R12 nineT are also available for the R12 S. What do you guys think? Does it need a little more spice, or is BMW Motorrad’s design perfect for you already?
