While the country continues to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic, the atmosphere at KTM Philippines is quite the opposite. As we see it, things are becoming a bit rosier for this Ayala-owned subsidiary.

Dino Santos, president of local KTM distributor Adventure Cycle Philippines (ACPI), said the KTM Asia Motorcycle Manufacturing (KAMMI) facility in Laguna has been operating at full capacity during the pandemic to keep up with the strong demand for PH-made motorbikes in China and other Southeast Asian nations. Currently, KAMMI’s hardworking employees produce an average of 1,000 units per month—80% of which goes to those countries.

The latest addition to these proudly Philippine-made KTM products is the new 790 Adventure R, which is a notch higher than the currently available 790 Adventure model in terms of features and electronics.

The five-month delay of the 790 Adventure R’s release was caused by the ongoing pandemic. During an episode of Tunay na Rider, Santos assured viewers that this off-road-biased machine will hit KTM showrooms in October.

The Adventure R comes with 10 levels of lean-sensitive traction control, and from the usual three riding modes—Street, Off-Road, and Rain—the third option is replaced with Rally mode for hardcore dirt riding.

The 790 Adventure R is powered by a 799cc LC8c parallel-twin engine that churns out an impressive 95hp and 88Nm—a bit tamer and more tuned for mid-range power than the street- and track-oriented 790 Duke. This compact mill is mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed manual gearbox.

This adventure bike also comes with KTM’s ride-by-wire technology which provides precise throttle commands, giving riders full control, particularly under extreme riding conditions. Being more off-road-centric than the standard Adventure, the Adventure R has a higher ground clearance and fully adjustable WP suspension.

It also boasts a five-inch full-color TFT display which adjusts brightness automatically based on ambient lighting. This easy-to-operate system uses a scroll button on the left handlebar grip, meaning riders can switch riding modes on the fly. Smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth is available using the KTM MY Ride app.

KTM Philippines has set the price of the 790 Adventure R at P749,000, which is a bargain compared to imported units originally priced at P957,000.
