When Kia gave us our first look at the exterior and the interior of the all-new Sorento just a couple of days ago, we wrote in our story that we might have to wait for the model’s official launch at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show for more details on what’s underneath all the metal. Well, we stand corrected.

The Korean carmaker has now revealed more information on the 2020 Kia Sorento, confirming that the midsize SUV will be the first model to be based on its new platform. Thanks to a compact engine-bay structure, shorter overhangs, and a longer wheelbase—by 10mm versus the outgoing model, to be exact—the next-gen Sorento’s cabin has more room than any other vehicle in its segment and will have class-leading cargo space, Kia claims. In addition, the new platform promises proper handling and a comfortable ride.

The next-gen Sorento will also pack Kia’s new ‘Smartstream’ turbo hybrid powertrain. Under the hood is a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection (T-GDi) engine, assisted by a 44.2kW electric motor and a 1.49kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The entire setup generates a combined 227hp and 350Nm, and will be available in Korea, Europe, and North America.

For the Korean and North American markets, another powertrain option will be available from launch: a 2.5-liter Smartstream T-GDi engine that produces 277hp and 421Nm. This will be mated to Kia’s new eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, dubbed the Smartstream 8DCT, which enables improved fuel efficiency and acceleration.

There will also be another engine option in Korea and Europe, but Kia hasn’t confirmed whether or not it will be available at launch. This is the 2.2-liter Smartstream diesel capable of 199hp and 440Nm, and mated to Kia’s new Smartstream 8DCT.

Kia says that there will be more options to choose from in the future, including both gasoline engines and plug-in hybrid setups.

As for safety tech, the new Sorento is equipped with the new multi-collision brake system, which automatically applies the brakes once a collision causes the airbags to deploy, therefore mitigating any possible secondary collisions. In certain markets, the vehicle will also be available with a remote smartphone Surround View Monitor, which lets drivers view their surroundings through their smartphones.

So, what do you think of the all-new Kia Sorento? Do you like everything you’ve seen so far?
