The manual transmission is a dying breed. Market demand, coupled with horrendous traffic in most major cities, has prompted almost every manufacturer to equip its offerings with various iterations of the automatic gearbox.
Audi seems to understand the passion that some still have for the stick shift, and offers the new A4 with a six-speed manual box. The latest generation A4’s 2.0-liter TFSI engine’s capabilities are fully realized, thanks to the gearbox and third pedal. The 252hp and 370Nm are coursed to all four wheels via a lightweight transmission that enables the sedan to sprint from 0-100kph in a quick 5.9 seconds. That’s a full 0.7 seconds faster than the previous model.
The quick sprint time is due to the extensive use of components such as a smaller clutch with open gearwheels, magnesium, and hollow shafts. This translates to weight savings of roughly 16kg. The other factor in the performance equation is the new Quattro all-wheel drive with ultra technology system. This is the German luxury brand’s vaunted four-wheel drivetrain with an added bonus. In this case, it is an electronic multi-plate clutch with a decoupler at the rear. Aside from being lighter, it helps give a more predictable torque application for increased traction in any weather condition, and of course, more enjoyable driving.
The new Audi A4 Quattro manual’s driving prowess is backed up by equally cool looks. This is courtesy of the Sport Plus package that adds goodies like 18-inch five-double-spoke star design aluminum alloy wheels, S-line leather/alcantara interior with sport seats, brushed aluminum pedals, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. The S4’s sport adaptive suspension and dynamic steering are also thrown into the mix. Finally, the sporty sedan can be had in an exclusive Daytona Grey paint scheme.
This premium compact sedan is for clients who want a stately ride yet still pine for the thrill of the drive. The kind of drivers who love to row their own gears in style.
