In a world that’s practically dominated by crossovers and SUVs, compact sports coupes are few and far between these days. It’s difficult to make a business case for it these days as the two-door market just isn’t what it used to be.

Sadly, another one bites the dust as Audi has stopped production of its TT. Its discontinuation was announced earlier this year, and the very last car rolled off the production line this week.

The final Audi TT

The final example of this sports compact coupe is a TTS finished in Chronos Grey that appears to be equipped with the Black Edition package. In the TT family, the TTS is the second-fastest model, slotting in just below the TT RS. This particular model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that’s good for 320hp and 400Nm of torque.

The Audi TT was first introduced as a concept in 1995, eventually reaching production in 1998. Penned by designer J Mays, its name is from the tough motorcycle race held in the Isle of Man, the Tourist Trophy. At the time, it was based on the fourth-generation Volkswagen Golf, and the first-gen TT was produced from 1998 to 2007.

Subsequent generations continued to be based on contemporary Volkswagen Golf platforms. Quattro all-wheel drive was available for most models, with the more powerful engines typically getting it standard. More potent S and RS models were introduced down the line, making use of turbocharged four-pot (TTS) or boosted inline-five (TT RS) engines.

Per the company’s figures, it had produced 662,772 units of the Audi TT in various body styles and engine combinations. So far, there is no hint of a successor for the TT, and it might be a while until the folks from Ingolstadt will have another go in the sports compact coupe market. Mind you, the TT won’t be the only sports Audi that will go away by the end of the year. The R8 will also be discontinued soon after that.
