If its status as BMW’s global bestseller is any indication, the all-new BMW X3 should be one of the carmaker’s most important launches in our market this year. The fourth generation is finally available on our shores, and just as we wished after we first drove this model last year, it’s the X3 30e xDrive M Sport plug-in hybrid variant that enters our country.

Let’s go through the most important things the P4,790,000 asking price will get you. First and foremost, there’s the combined output of 299hp and 450Nm of torque. That comes courtesy of  BMW eDrive Technology, which mates a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo engine and a single electric motor. Driving the 20-inch wheels on all four corners is an eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission.

Pure electric range is around 81-90km, according to BMW. With hybrid propulsion, the X3 can return roughly 12.7-13.8km/L. Carbon emissions are at 26g/km.

BMW has taken quite a risk with the model’s front-end design. The latest renditions of the kidney grille, especially on the brand’s SUVs, have been met with mixed reactions, and the one on the X3’s nose is no exception. For those who don’t think it’s prominent enough, it also gets the Iconic Glow illuminating feature.

This being an M Sport spec, it wears 20-inch two-tone M light-alloy wheels, an M aero package, a high-gloss M Shadow line, and M Sport brakes with dark blue calipers. The compact crossover also rides on an adaptive suspension that offers a balance between dynamism and comfort depending on driving conditions.

Inside, the cabin is shrouded in M Veganza/Alcantara black upholstery with brushed aluminum accents to break the pitch-dark monotony. Sport seats with lumbar support ensure a comfortable driving position. Meanwhile, the BMW Live Cockpit Professional setup combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.9-inch widescreen display running on iDrive OS 9. There’s also a head-up display that allows quick reference to the most important driving and navigation information.

Tri-zone automatic air-conditioning keeps the interior cooled down according to front and rear occupants’ preferences, and a Harman Kardon surround sound system provides high-quality audio output. Other bonus multimedia and convenience features are ConnectedDrive services, an interior camera that shows what’s happening in the backseat and also takes photos, roller sun blinds, the Comfort Access keyless entry system, and a wireless smartphone charger.

Apart from the basic safety features, BMW Driving Assistant includes more advanced active driving aids to help prevent collisions and protect both occupants and other road users in the event of an untoward incident. The Iconic Sounds feature also alerts pedestrians and other motorists of the X3’s presence when it’s operating in full electric mode.

The BMW X3 30e xDrive M Sport is the second plug-in hybrid in the German brand’s local lineup, following the X5 that arrived earlier this year. The BMW Philippines portfolio has been getting more diversified over the last couple of years, thanks to PHEVs and pure EVs in addition to traditional combustion-engined cars.
